About
A & J Nelson (Haulage Contractors) Ltd has been serving Scotland and beyond since 1970. Founded by Alexander (Sandy) Nelson with a single truck and cattle float, supported closely by his wife Edna. The company quickly built a reputation for hard work, reliability, and customer service. Joined by his brother Johnny in 1975 and his son Colin in 1985, the business expanded steadily and moved to its current base on the historic Lindsay Colliery site in Kelty, where we continue to operate today. To strengthen our reach and improve flexibility for customers across the UK, we also operate from a depot in Cumbria.
Over the years, our fleet and operations have evolved to meet the changing needs of our customers. From our early navy-painted ERFs to today’s modern fleet of 40 vehicles, we have consistently invested in equipment and people to ensure efficiency, safety, and dependable service. In 2005, we made the strategic decision to move away from livestock transport and focus on bulk product and timber haulage, which has allowed us to grow and diversify into one of Scotland’s most established haulage providers.
Now in its third generation, A & J Nelson remains proudly family-owned and operated. Sandy’s son Colin leads the business, supported by his sister Gail in accounts, his cousin John as Bulk Transport Manager, and his son Wallace, who has recently joined full-time to bring new ideas and perspective. This family involvement ensures continuity of values, a hands-on approach, and a long-term vision for the business.
Today, with over 55 years of experience, a team of more than 55 skilled employees, and a fleet working the length and breadth of the UK, A & J Nelson continues to deliver for our customers with the same principles that built the company from the start: trust, hard work, and commitment.

“Fantastic local family run business to deal with, we have used for their DVSA ATF facility and for voluntary brake tests for many years now, always extremely accommodating and helpful.”
